Optometrist

Asumi Yamaguchi

Having experienced vision difficulties myself as a child, I understand how much comfortable vision can affect everyday life. I enjoy helping patients of all ages understand their vision and find solutions that work for them.

Getting to know Asumi

Originally from Tokyo, I moved to New Zealand as a teenager and went on to complete my Bachelor of Optometry with Honours at the University of Auckland, graduating with Honours in 2023.

My interest in optometry began much earlier. Growing up with amblyopia, or a lazy eye, made me curious about how our eyes work and why my vision was different. The optometrist who cared for me as a child made a lasting impression, and inspired me to pursue a career where I could help others with their own vision.

I moved to Whanganui in early 2024 and have really enjoyed becoming part of the community. Since joining Wanganui Eyecare, I have had the opportunity to further develop my interest in behavioural and paediatric optometry, areas I find particularly rewarding.

I love that optometry is about much more than simply seeing clearly. The right care can make everyday activities, learning and work more comfortable, and I enjoy finding solutions that are tailored to each person.

I continue to build my knowledge in behavioural and paediatric optometry and enjoy keeping up with developments in eye care. Working alongside an experienced team has given me the opportunity to expand my clinical skills while developing the areas of optometry I am particularly passionate about.

Areas of Interest

Cataracts

Nothing excites me more than finding another cataract in the eye of my 15th 85-year-old of the day! CPAC forms bring me joy and referral letters for cataract surgery are a part of my day I look forward to.

Outside the consulting room

Outside of optometry, I love reading, travelling and going to musicals. A highlight was visiting London in 2024, where I spent plenty of time making the most of its theatre scene.

Closer to home, I enjoy knitting, spending time with family and friends, and exploring Whanganui. The Saturday Riverside Market has quickly become one of my favourite places to wander around, enjoy the atmosphere and try something delicious.
