Getting to know John
I first came to Whanganui after being offered a new graduate position, and I’ll admit I was fairly dubious about leaving city life behind.
To my surprise, Whanganui turned out to be a humming town with a personality of its own. I’ve always felt very fortunate to have been welcomed into such a warm and friendly community. A few years, a partner, two kids and a dog later, Whanganui is very much home.
What I enjoy most about optometry is our ability to provide solutions that genuinely improve people’s everyday lives. As the role of optometrists in healthcare has expanded, I’ve particularly enjoyed the challenges that come with more specialised areas of eye care.
I have a keen interest in dry eye treatment and medical eyecare, as well as the advances being made in myopia control for children. As an authorised prescriber optometrist, I can prescribe oral and topical medicines where appropriate for the treatment and management of eye conditions.

Outside the consulting room
Outside of optometry, I enjoy keeping active and spending plenty of time outdoors. More recently, I’ve developed an interest in horticulture, although that seems to have unexpectedly extended to farm animals as well.
After being gifted two sick lambs, Peaches and Woolington quickly became very vocal members of the household. Life is now a little busier with two kids and a dog as well, but I still enjoy making time for health, fitness and trying something new.
